Four notable players have cemented their place in the WTA
Finals 2023 event. The competition will be played from October 29 to November
05 in Cancun, Mexico.
As per the latest rankings, four top players have already
qualified for the mega-event.
The first big name to qualify is the current world number one
Belarus’
Aryna Sabalenka. The 25-year-old has recently suffered a heartbreaking
defeat in the final of the US Open to America’s young sensation
Coco Gauff with
a score of 2-6, 6-3, 6-2.
Second on the list features the former world number one and
current world number two Poland’s
Iga Swiatek.
The 22-year-old had a disappointing outing in the fourth and
final Grand Slam of the year where she was defending her title as well.
Swiatek was knocked out of the competition after losing to Latvia’s
Jelena Ostapenko in the fourth round with a score of 3-6, 6-3, 6-1.
Third in the list features the newly-crowned US Open
champion Gauff who has been in sublime form in the recent past.
The fourth and the last confirmed player for the
WTA Finals this
year is Kazakhstan’s Elena Rybakina. The 24-year-old also did not have a great
outing in the US Open 2023 where she was knocked out after losing the third-round fixture against Romania’s Sorana Cirstea with a score of 6-3, 6-7, 6-4.
Other notable players
such as America’s Jessica Pegula, Czech Republic’s Marketa Vondrousova,
Karolina Muchova, and Tunisia’s Ons Jabeur still have some work to do before
booking their spot for the mega-event.
