Tennis journalist Jon Wertheim made interesting revelations
about how the players felt following the ban on former world number one Simona
Halep.
The 31-year-old recently received a four-year suspension
after testing positive for the prohibited substance Roxadustat in the US Open 2022.
Wertheim was quoted in a report recently where he stated
that players a lot of players are angry by understanding that they have been
beaten unfairly.
"Players’ reactions and opinions are all over the map
here," he said. "Serena Williams — who of course lost to Halep in the
Wimbledon final — made her thoughts known. I heard from multiple other players
who have similar sentiments."
"It’s just not that players who lost to Halep now
wonder whether she was dirty. Having finished in the top 10 in 2022, she earned
WTA bonus money.”
Despite such a decision, Halep continued to maintain that she
was innocent and vowed to continue fighting to clear her name.
"I was confident after the hearing because there were
so many things that made no sense and that are not fair," she said. "When
I received the decision, I was in complete shock. I could not believe that they
suspended me for four years when we found the contamination and my blood was
totally normal. They didn’t find anything bad in my blood.
"It’s crazy that they made this decision with
everything [her legal team presented]. They judged me on scenarios. There is no
proof. It’s just insane."
Halep, who has not played a single professional tennis match
since September 2022, has an impressive record while playing at the highest
level.
The Constanța-born won two Grand Slams in her career. The first of those victories came in 2018 when she defeated America’s Sloane Stephens in
the final of the French Open with a score of 3–6, 6–4, 6–1.
Her next victory came a year later in 2019 when she
defeated the former world number one Serena Williams in the final of Wimbledon
in straight sets with a score of 6-2, 6-2.
