Following her opening round loss at the Adelaide International I last week,
Aryna Sabalenka picked up her second straight defeat as she was bundled out of the Adelaide International II event by
Rebecca Peterson.
After winning the first set, the top seed was unable to close out the match, as Peterson took control and escaped with a 5-7 6-1 7-5 victory. The Swedish star was able to match Sabalenka's pace from the baseline, employing her consistency to frustrate the Belarusian.
With both ladies exchanging breaks in the first set, it was Sabalenka who eventually prevailed despite being almost undone by 11 double faults in the first set alone. The World No.2 committed a horrid 21 double faults during the entire match, surpassing her mark of 18 in her opening round loss last week.
Despite the top seed's inconsistency, it was Peterson who showed grit in mounting a comeback as she raced through the second set. With a fiery determination in her eyes, the Swedish No.1 was able to prevent a third set tiebreak, clinching the match after an exhausting two hours and 18 minutes.
