No.13 seed Maria Sakkari produced a statement win by seeing off American teenager Coco Gauff in 65 minutes in the first round of the Western & Southern Open.
Sakkari claimed a 6-1, 6-3 victory to bounce back after a surprise defeat in Palermo to Kristyna Pliskova at the WTA restart but it was a supreme display from the World No.21.
The Greek faced one break point across two sets and won nearly 70 percent of the points in her service games; as well as breaking Gauff twice in each set to win through.
Gauff's forehand was an issue with only six winners to 24 unforced errors. While Sakkari hit 14 winners to 21 unforced errors.
She only really faced pressure towards the end when the finishing line was in sight but this was still navigated with relative ease. Next up will be either Yulia Putintseva or Zhang Shuai.
