Maria Sakkari is into the semi-finals of DC Open Washington and will face Madison Keys later this evening after seeing off
Leylah Fernandez on Friday night.
It was a 7-5, 6-2 win for the Greek who has not been in the best form all season after her ultra consistent past 18 months barring not winning any titles.
In Keys, it will be an interesting test with an American also awaiting in the final potentially if Jessica Pegula and Coco Gauff win through their battles with Elina Svitolina and Belinda Bencic respectively.
Fernandez pulled it back from 4-2 down to 5-4 in a close first set before losing it and Sakkari's sharpness increased as Fernandez level fell.
This led to a much easier 6-2 scoreline in the second. But like Sakkari after being in bad form, it is a welcome return for Fernandez who will now head home to Montreal for the
Canadian Open with the draw taking place on Friday night.
The tournament will continue though for Sakkari who is set to pull double duty later this evening before a potential final tomorrow.
