The 2022
WTA Finals kicked off on Monday evening, with
Maria Sakkari edging out
Jessica Pegula in the first match of the group stage.
Sakkari prevailed in a 7-6(6) 7-6(4) victory over her American opponent, securing vital points that temporarily put her atop the standings in the Nancy Richey Group. The Greek star was assisted by some poor serving from Pegula, who hit four double faults in the opening set.
Both ladies exchanged breaks in the opening set, before Pegula forced a tiebreak that saw Sakkari's consistency prevail. The World No.5 raced to a 3-1 lead in the second set, but Pegula fought back, leveling the score at 4-4. With no more breaks of serve, a second tiebreak ensued.
Once again, Sakkari's consistency proved to be the deciding factor, enabling her to wear out her opponent before closing our proceedings after two hours and 11 minutes.
With this victory in her back pocket, Sakkari now awaits the result of the other group match that features a clash between Ons Jabeur and Aryna Sabalenka.
