Serena Williams has been in Australia undergoing mandatory quarantine ahead of the events like many other players.
Unlike many other players quarantining in Melbourne, Serena is part of a select group of players stationed in Adelaide which has easier rules making the stay easier for the players which caused some backlash from other players. Speaking on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert she said:
“It’s (quarantine rules) super, super strict, but it’s really good. So, Australia right now has, the last I heard, zero cases of Covid. So that is unbelievable, right, the whole country? That is really amazing."
Williams who has travelled to Australian with her 3-year old daughter Olympia spoke about the challenges of that during quarantine as well as the process upon arrival:
“So when we come here in Australia, everyone has to quarantine in a room for 14 days. It’s insane and super intense but it’s super good because after that you can have a new normal like we were used to this time last year in the United States.”
She continued:
“They’re (Tennis Australia) doing it right. It’s definitely hard with a three-year-old to be in the hotel all day, but it’s worth it because you want everyone to be safe at the end of the day.”
Williams currently has 23 Grand Slams only needing one more to tie Margaret Court for the most in history. Her last win came in Australia in 2017 and since then she has lost 4 Grand Slam finals so this event is paramount for her.
