Former American player
John Isner has expressed happiness
after seeing
Jessica Pegula become the highest-ranked player in women’s tennis. The 31-year-old became the world number three after producing some incredible performances in recent times.
Pegula most recently lifted the Charleston Open after
beating one-time Grand Slam winner Sofia Kenin in the final in straight sets
with a score of 6-3, 7-5. Before that, she had an incredible run at the Miami
Open as well, where she finished as the runner-up after losing to the reigning
world number one Aryna Sabalenka in the final in straight sets with a score of
7-5, 6-2.
Those performances helped Pegula overtake
Coco Gauff to become
the highest-ranked player in women’s tennis in the singles category. The
21-year-old, who is regarded as one of the most talented players in women’s
tennis, is going through a rough patch as she has now failed to play in the
quarterfinal of four consecutive WTA events. Former American player Isner has
been recently quoted in a repo
rt by The Tennis Gazette, where he highlighted how
impressive Pegula has been to overtake Gauff in the rankings.
“She now has 25 wins for the year. That’s number one on the
WTA Tour,” said Isner. “And she will now become the number one ranked American,
as she takes over Coco Gauff and Jessie will rise to number three. She is on a
heater so far this year! Awesome for us, we are all big fans of Jessie. She is
an incredibly nice person and certainly has a lot of momentum heading into
Madrid, which I imagine will be her next tournament. She can play well on all
surfaces, she just proved that. Clay is probably not her favourite surface.
Green clay is a little different to red but she will go into those European
tournaments with momentum.”
