The ongoing
Monte-Carlo Masters is moving towards the third
phase after players cemented their spots in the round of 16. One of the biggest
results of the second round saw the reigning world number two
Alexander Zverev crashed
out of the competition after losing to Italy’s
Matteo Berrettini with a score
of 2-6, 6-3, 7-5.
An interesting situation occurred when people simultaneously clapped on every court when Zverev suffered a defeat. It is clear that cheering on every court was for different reasons. The moment was
captured in the live footage of the other match going on in the same arena.
Talking after the match, Berrettini expressed his feelings
and stated that it was ‘not easy’ to win against the 2025 Australian Open
runner-up. "The game plan was the same but I changed my attitude and the
way I was believing in my strokes," said Berrettini. "I wasn't
hitting my forehand and serve like I had in previous days and I had to adapt
and adjust to the conditions and Sascha was playing unbelievable, so it was not
easy. Then I told myself to be more aggressive and if I am going to lose this
match, I am going to do the right things and luckily it worked. I grew up on
clay, playing on it until 19. On Tour we don't play on it as much but at the
same time I have missed the biggest tournament on clay for the past three years
and that was tough and now I want to enjoy it. I feel really comfortable on
clay."
The result was a bad one for Zverev and it also ensured that
he, just like Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz, will not be able to claim the top spot
before the return of the reigning world number one Italy’s Jannik Sinner who is
currently observing a three-month ban after agreeing a deal with the World
Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) for failing two dope tests in March last year.
