Camila Giorgi's lawyer clears doubts about her future, after the Italian's unexpected retirement. The former Canadian Open champion suddenly retired without any official announcement, which was made on May 7 when she was listed as retired on the official ITIA website. Giorgi last played against Iga Swiatek at the Miami Open, in a straight-sets defeat.
At 32, Giorgi was still seen as a competitive player, having won her most recent title at the WTA 250 Mérida Open in February 2023. In recent years, she maintained a ranking around the top-50, with her career-high of No. 26 reached in 2022.

Giorgi's Lawyer Responds to Allegations

Without any formal statements, Giorgi disappeared from the public eye for months and has not addressed her status. Various media outlets reported allegations against the former player, including tax evasion and fake Covid vaccinations, which were confirmed by her lawyer.
Additionally, Italian media reported accusations from the landlord of the house Giorgi was renting, claiming that she abruptly moved out, owing six months of rent, and allegedly took "Persian rugs, valuable furniture, and even a half-ton antique table."
Initially, Giorgi was believed to be in Buenos Aires, Argentina, where her father and former coach is from. She also spent time in the USA and Italy. Giorgi reappeared on social media a few weeks ago, continuing her career as a model, sharing photos from various photoshoots. Now, her lawyer has addressed the situation publicly.

“Camila Giorgi is in Rome. In recent months, she has travelled for work. In short, she has not run away at all as some have insinuated,” said lawyer Edmondo Tomaselli to the Italian outlet Corriere del Veneto, information also shared by Eurosport.
Giorgi remains involved in the fake vaccination case and is under investigation. Her preliminary hearing is set for November 5th, where her lawyer is likely to request a shortened trial. The Vicenza prosecutor's office accused her of falsifying vaccinations to obtain the green pass required for travel at the time.
"My client spent some time in the United States, then returned to Italy and is also pursuing some work projects but has never disappeared from social media. It's just gossip, no desire to not be found, only personal commitments. Her fans have always followed her through her Instagram page, she has never been unreachable," added Giorgi’s lawyer.
