Rafael Nadal could be in line for a shock return to the Davis Cup Finals line-up with team captain and friend of the great Spaniard, David Ferrer saying the possibility has been mooted.
Nadal withdrew from this week's Laver Cup and is next slated to play the Six Kings Slam in Saudi Arabia. But many see a natural conclusion potentially even being representing his country at the turn of the year.
"I have spoken to Rafa... And why not? There is still time, I will speak to him and we will decide what we will do. The important thing is that he is well and, if he wants to, he will be in good condition," said Ferrer in his press conference after Spain's win to reach the Last Eight.
Also asked why he wasn't considered this time despite withdrawing from the Laver Cup anyway, he said that he needed time with his family hence why he wasn't involved with Carlos Alcaraz in co as they booked their Turin spot.
"It was not his turn, he needed days of rest and to be with his family and recharge his batteries. I will attend some tournaments and decide on the team."
"The good thing is that I have great players and the bad thing is that there are always some who have to be left out, but as of today I don't have a 100% clear team. What I do know is that this week I have been immensely happy to see them compete and the great team atmosphere they have had."
The Davis Cup Finals have good memories too for Nadal with the Spaniard famously helping them to beat Canada and win the title in 2019. He may also be called upon due to Alcaraz.
With the proximity to the ATP Finals and Alcaraz being likely to play in Turin albeit all but confirmed, it will be an interesting decision whether he will follow Sinner and Djokovic and pull double duty.
