Bianca Andreescu suffered a shocking defeat at the hands of
Shelby Rogers in the first round of the
Mubadala Silicon Valley Classic, as the American put on a convincing display to escape with the victory.
Rogers pulled off a 6-4 6-2 win over the 2019 US Open champion, saving all three break points faced in the opening round encounter. The American relied on her consistency and placement to frustrate her Canadian opponent, attacking Andreescu's second serve at every opportunity.
For her part, Andreescu was unable to get much behind her serve. The former World No.3 was also hindered by double faults, hitting five in the match to zero by her opponent.
With a convincing victory in hand and her confidence rising, Rogers will face top seed Maria Sakkari in what should be a thrilling encounter on Thursday.
