Ads aired for the Serena Williams backed drug, GLP-1 during her return to the sport as weight loss through these routes continues to gain traction. But is it something that should be outlawed from tennis?
Former Wimbledon finalist and now a prominent pundit and commentator, Eugenie Bouchard has had her say as she believes that anyone using it is doping and should be banned from the sport while at the US Open.
The Canadian stated that she is against doping in sports so by proxy would oppose the use of them if they are proven to be performance enhancing. Williams has used said drug prior to her return to the sport when she was off for some time evolving away from tennis and it helped what was back then a remarkable weight loss.
She said that she had been struggling throughout her tennis career with gaining weight and also looming health issues in particular with diabetes and this played a crucial role in her choice. She lost roughly 34 pounds in a year after beginning this journey and while top athletes are less likely to need to use routes like this due to the fact that they are in fact training everyday, some struggle to lose weight no matter how regimented their regime is.
Williams looked superb when she stepped back onto the court at Wimbledon in terms of her look and perhaps gave others food for thought when it came to using the drug. But Bouchard shut down the notion of it being used in sport and said she would only change her mind realistically if it was proven that it didn't help people cheat the system.

Bouchard reiterates view on clean sport

Bouchard reiterated that in her view she is overall just for clean sport in general so whether or not it is a good thing, she still sees it as being a grey area no matter if it is explored or not in the future.
“It's interesting because doping is a huge topic in our sport, especially in tennis. I do think if there's a performance-enhancing aspect to it, then it should be banned. Like, I'm very against, you know, doping in sports. I really believe in clean sport and so if the science and the research comes out with that then I would fully, you know, support not being able to use it," she said to Front Office Sports.
“I do think we're at a point where it's still kind of so new and they're probably just trying to like research it and trying to figure out if it even is, you know, performance-enhancing or not. But yeah, I mean, I just believe in clean sport. That's definitely my opinion.”
