Anna Kalinskaya advances into the quarterfinals after Halep is forced to retire due to illness. Final score: 7-5, 2-0. #CitiOpen
Simona Halep played a fairly bad match against Kalinskaya in Washington and down 5-7 0-2 the Romanian retired.
The reason for the retirement is not known but it might be some minor injury or some other issues troubling Halep because she did not look good at all on the court. From the start, it was obvious that Halep was not feeling herself as Kalinskaya took the early break.
The Russian held her serve from 15-40 in the 2nd game of the match to take a 2-0 lead. She broke Halep once more for the 3-0 lead which became a 4-0 lead after another hold. Then it was time for Halep to start playing better and she did. The groundstrokes started hitting and she came back to 3-4 with Kalinskaya holding serve for 5-3.
From there Halep went on another mini-run to make it 5-5 and she was up 40-0 on her serve at five all. And then she threw it away by losing five points in a row to drop her serve. Kalinskaya finished it off with 7-5 and quickly took a 2-0 lead in the final set. Halep then retired from the match.
