Former world No. 1
Simona Halep will be joined by coach Morgan Bourbon at the Masters events in
Indian Wells and Miami.
The news was first reported by Romanian media with Halep not publicly confirming the news. Bourbon currently works as a coach at the Mouratoglou Tennis Academy but will travel with Halep to the United States in order to support her as she searches for ways to improve her form. Recently Halep tried playing without a coach and while her level was solid overall she suffered bad defeats where she was unable to find a solution.
A coach could help her better prepare for matches allowing her to focus more on tennis than match-prep hence why the decision to trial a new coach. Halep was quoted last month:
"I
don’t have a coach right now, I have a sparring partner and he’s travelling with me these days. I’m not looking for a coach, I’m just enjoying
my time alone and hopefully, I can do a good job."
Seems like the approach left Halep unsatisfied prompting the trial. Halep won the event in 2015 and will be looking for something similar this time around.
