Sloane
Stephens won her first WTA 125 title by defeating Greet Minnen 6-3, 6-4.
The former
world No. 3 lived up to her favoritism at the WTA 125K Saint-Malo in France and
lifted the trophy.
Sloane Stephens regained several positions in the rankings
and will be ranked as world No. 36 after a great week where she was the top
seed in the tournament.
Stephens'
appearance at the WTA 125 was due to her early elimination at the Madrid Open
against Romanian Jaqueline Cristian in the first round. On her way to the final,
she defeated locals Emeline Dartron and Jessika Ponchet, Briton Freya Christie,
and former world No. 4
Elina Svitolina in the semifinals.
In the
final, she faced Greet Minnen. The Belgian had won the doubles title with
Bibiane Schoofs, but lost in the singles final against the American 6-3, 6-4.
Stephens will now face Argentina's
Nadia Podoroska in the first round of the
Internazionali BNL d’Italia Rome.
