Sloane Stephens details the horrific racist and sexist abuse and threats she received after yesterday’s loss (and most other losses). (content warning here)
Sloane Stephens played a great match against Angelique Kerber almost beating the former champ but a late set collapse cost her the match. After the match, she revealed that she got around 2000 abusive messages on Instagram. It's a problem that has been plaguing athletes and other public persons for a long time, pretty much since the start of social media.
All of those accounts are fake accounts that write terrible stuff to players. Daniil Medvedev touched upon a similar topic earlier in the year saying that tennis players get a lot of messages that are mostly tied to angry people losing money on gambling. Taylor Fritz received many angry messages as well after one of his recent losses with the American firing back against individuals gambling asking them to gel help for their addiction.
In her revelation Stephens wrote:
"I am human, after last night's match, I got 2K + messages of abuse/anger from people upset by yesterday's result. It's so hard to read messages like these, but I'll post a few so you guys can see what it's like after a loss."
Stephens further wrote:
"This isn't talked about enough, but it freaking sucks. I'm happy to have people in my corner who support me. I'm choosing positive vibes over negative ones. I choose to show you guys happiness on here, but it's not always smiles and roses."
