Sloane Stephens is back into the winner's circle with a vintage performance in Guadalajara, reaching the final and defeating
Marie Bouzkova.
The American played very good tennis all week long and reached her first final in quite a while. In the final, she faced the younger Bouzkova who was also playing a very good event. The final itself was a very competitive one. The first set ended with Stephens winning it 7-5 after a strong battle. The American lost focus in the 2nd set losing her serve early.
She never recovered after that as Bouzkova smashes her 6-1 in the 2nd set levelling the overall score to 1-1. The experience ultimately prevailed as Stephens proved much better in the final set once more. It was a very long one (over 50 minutes) with a lot of long and exhausting rallies. Stephens kept her composure down the stretch winning the final set with 6-2.
After her win, Stephens said:
"It’s the beginning of the season, so there’s still a lot of tennis to be played, but I’m excited to be able to put some matches together. Excited that I was able to do that, get a title, and hopefully continue on with that momentum."
