Ahead of the Volvo Car Open,
Sofia Kenin spoke about embracing clay as a surface but today she did not have her best day of tennis.
Sofia Kenin entered this event in high hopes following a very disappointing Miami Open campaign. After reaching the French Open final the American embraced clay as a surface despite not liking it initially. The first set was an exciting one that saw several consecutive breaks with each player not being able to hold their serve.
At 5-4, Kenin was finally able to hold her serve but even that game featured a strong battle where she had to save a break point. The start of the 2nd set also saw 4 consecutive break points with Davis coming out with some momentum after that. She was able to take control of the match-winning the 2nd set 6-3.
The final set started badly for Kenin who found herself down 0-3 at the start. She took a lengthy medical timeout after which she started playing much better. She would pull the two breaks back to make it 3-3 before losing her serve once again. Davis was able to confirm it and take a 5-3 lead.
Kenin quickly fired back winning a swift serving game to make it 5-4. Davis would need to close out the match on her own serve which has been shaky at times. In the end, Davis was able to close it out with 6-4. Another disappointing result for Kenin who is not looking good entering the clay season.
