World number one
Iga Swiatek has achieved yet another milestone
after her heroics in the
Indian Wells. The WTA 1000 event is set to come to an
end on Sunday when the winner of the event will be declared.
One of the finalists in the women’s singles category will be
Swiatek who booked her place after beating the Ukraine’s Marta Kostyuk in the semifinal
with a score of 6-2, 6-1.
With that result, Swiatek has now equalled the record of the former
world number Steffi Graff’s win % of 89.5 at the Indian Wells.
The reigning world number one also lifted the title back in
the 2022 edition when she defeated Greece’s Maria Sakkari in the final in
straight sets with a score of 6-4, 6-1.
Interestingly, Swiatek’s opponent in Sunday’s final will
be once again Sakkari who managed to book her place in the final after beating
the current world number three America’s Coco Gauff with a score of 6-4, 6-7,
6-2.
Sunday’s final will be the fourth meeting between the two
players. In the previous three meetings, Swiatek had a slight edge as she won
on three occasions. Interestingly, their previous meeting between the players
took place in the final of the Indian Wells back in 2022.
