Sloane Stephens rediscovered the form that saw her capture the title in 2017, upsetting
Coco Gauff in the second round of the 2021
US Open.
The all-American affair saw Stephens prevail 6-4 6-2, producing a superb performance that stunned the 21st seed. Stephens had all the answers for Gauff's play, displaying the athleticism and poise that saw her break into the Top 10 in the world.
Gauff was unable to generate any momentum, as Stephens' superior play kept the teenager scrambling around the court. Furthermore, the 2017 champion was exemplary on serve, winning 83% of points on her first serve despite not hitting any aces.
After a closely contested first set, it was all Stephens in the second as she broke her opponent early in the set. A second break all but sealed Gauff's fate, with Stephens moving on to the third round after an hour and six minutes.
