Svitolina moves to US Open quarterfinal after win over Halep

Elina Svitolina in the US Open quarterfinal after a strong performance and victory over Simona Halep 6-3 6-3.

Simona Halep had a very good run at the US Open but the Romanian who is coming back from injury could not solve the Elina Svitolina riddle. Svitolina defeated her 5 times before so Halep has had her issues with the Ukrainian before. In this match, she started off well breaking Svitolina first to take a 2-1 lead.

Svitolina pulled it back to make it 2-2 before holding her serve a bit later when facing double break point. In the very next game, she was able to wear down Halep enough to win the game and then she closed out the set with 6-3. Halep played a solid set but in key moments Svitolina was just better.

She defended very well forcing Halep to be overaggressive many times resulting in an error. Errors plagued Halep in the 2nd set, especially where she lost her serve very early. A bit later she pulled it back but then lost it again. She lost it a final 3rd time at 3-5 giving Svitolina the 6-3 6-3 victory.

A very good showing from Svitolina who played exactly how she needed to in order to defeat Halep. For Simona a solid effort but she needs more matches at the highest of level before she is capable of winning majors again.
