Elina Svitolina reached moved past Zarazua to reach
Roland Garros round 2 as
Victoria Azarenka is out at the hands of Schmiedlova.
Elina Svitolina continued her Roland Garros campaign with another solid performance against
Renata Zarazua defeating her in three sets. She started off well in the first taking an early 4-0 set and it looked like it would be an easy match. Zarazua got one break back but it wouldn't be enough to complete the turnaround. The next set was terrible for Svitolina who lost it 6-0. It was a set where she couldn't get anything going while Zarazua continued playing well carried from the late set really of the previous set.
The Ukrainian composed herself in the 3rd and started playing much better. She took an early break but gave it right back much to her disappointment which was visible by her gestures. She channelled some of that into anger and played a furious 4 game stretch winning all of them ending the set 6-2.
Victoria Azarenka didn't enjoy a good day on the red clay today she was defeated by Schmiedlova quite convincingly 6-2 6-2. Her struggles were evident early as Schmiedlova broke her in the first with some very good tactical play. She entered the game very prepared forcing Azarenka to play long rallies which she didn't enjoy.
Schmiedlova played strong all match from the baseline hitting the ball hard and serving strong serves when she needed. Azarenka tried to shorten the points but it turned out she would just smacking the ball the wide most of the time. She totalled 36 unforced errors compared Schmiedlovas 20 and that proved key in the match. A disappointing result for Azarenka who didn't even want to play at the Roland Garros complaining about the conditions.
