"I really wanted to give an effort here. (I'm) struggling to walk so that's a tell-tale sign that I should try to recover" Get well soon, Serena! #RolandGarros
Serena Williams has withdrawn from Roland Garros less than hour before she was set to take to the court for her second round tie with Tsvetana Pironkova.
Williams started her campaign with victory over Kristie Ahn on Monday 7-6, 6-0, but will not face the Bulgarian who she defeated on her return at the US Open.
No reason was given initially for Serena to withdraw with it being revealed through the Roland Garros website but since then, she has confirmed it is an Achilles injury with the rehab set to take just over a month.
It is another tournament for Williams albeit due to a withdrawal where she hasn't been able to claim an elusive 24th Grand Slam. Now Pironkova will play Barbora Strycova or Barbora Krejcikova who are currently playing their second round tie.
