Iga Swiatek is going home but she concluded her first experience at the WTA Finals with a win over a very solid Paula Badosa.
This match was not very important for Paula Badosa and her causal play on the court somewhat demonstrated that. Iga Swiakte wanted this win badly and again it showed in the way she played. There was urgency and a lot of focus to end the season with the win for the Polish player while Badosa was already probably looking ahead to her clash with Muguruza in the semifinals.
Badosa started the match well breaking Swiatek early with some strong play from the baseline. She never really gave up on that playstyle and when started committing more errors Iga found her chance. She pulled the break back and continued applying pressure. Swiatek had a set point at 5-4 but Baosa hung on. Ultimately Swiatak was able to pull it out 7-5.
For Badosa, the most important thing was to stay healthy in this match in order to try and reach the finals of the event. She managed to do that by holding back a bit not forcing the issues too much. Even so, she once again had a break in hand at the start of the 2nd set. Swiatek continued battling and pulled the break back. A 3-1 lead for Badoas turned into a 4-4 scoreline but she was not worried.
She continued playing her playstyle and with a few errors Swiatek was able to create another break point chance. This one was actually a match point she converted. A great win for Swiatke who finishes the season on a positive note.
