World No.1
Iga Swiatek once again justified her top ranking on Friday night at the 2022
San Diego Open, cruising past
Coco Gauff in a rematch from their encounter at this year's French Open final.
The top seed required just 65 minutes to record a 6-0 6-3 victory over the American teenager, dictating play from the start as she obtained an early break and never looked back. Gauff was unable to handle the pace and precision coming from her opponent's racket, as the sixth seed was left flustered after every service game.
After Swiatek raced through the first set without dropping a game, it was up to Gauff to prevent a double bagel. With the crowd stirring her on, the 18-year old finally won her first game after being broken to begin the second set. However, it was to no avail as Swiatek remained in control, saving all three break points faced before closing out the match in dominant fashion.
Another American stands in Swiatek's path to the final, as
Jessica Pegula overcame compatriot Madison Keys in their quarterfinal match. The fourth seed will look to avenge her US Open loss to Swiatek, where she fell in straight sets at the quarterfinal stage.
