Current world number two
Iga Swiatek wore the shoes from
Roger Federer-backed On company during the Tokyo Open.
The 22-year-old made a winning start to her campaign in
Japan after beating Mai Hontama in the round of 16 in straight sets with a
score of 6-4, 7-5.
After the match, Swiatek posted a picture on her official
account on social media platform X — previously known as Twitter — and confirmed
that she wore the shoes from On brand.
Swiatek will be hoping to continue her winning run when she
will face Russia’s Veronika Kudermetova in the quarterfinal of the competition.
A victory in Tokyo will be a big sigh of relief for the
Polish tennis star, especially after she lost her top spot in the WTA rankings
recently.
Swiatek is coming into the competition on the back of a
disappointing outing in the recently concluded US Open where she was knocked out
in the fourth round after losing to Latvia’s Jelena Ostapenko with a score of
3-6, 6-3, 6-1.
That result was enough to lose the number one spot to
Belarus’ Aryna Sabalenka. The 25-year-old went all the way to the final of the
fourth and final Grand Slam of the year but lost to America’s young sensation
Coco Gauff with a score of 2-6, 6-3, 6-2.
