Iga Swiatek will contest the US Open final later today against Ons Jabeur and she became the first number one since Serena Williams in 2014 to make the final.
Top seeds at events don't make the final as often as people think they do simply because tennis is such a specific sport where anyone can beat anyone. It does happen from time to time, but it's particularly rare on the WTA tour. The sport's parity on the WTA side is incredible and a stat confirms just that.
Serena Williams was the last top seed at the US Open to make the final. It happened almost a decade ago in 2014. That was until Swiatek beat Aryna Sabalenka and made the final as the top seed. Yes, the Polish player is the first number one ranked player to make the final since Williams did in 2014. Quite extraordinary indeed. The final is played later today at 22:00 CET. Don't miss it.

- Having spent weeks and weeks through the years on tour, I can say with confidence that Conchita was (is) one of the very few who realize the surprising level of maturity (and sometimes lack of) which Mirra seems to have developed in such a demanding adult world of Pro-Tennis. While at the same time reminding herself (Conchita, that is) that Mirra is still young and developing mentally and physically. The general public may forget at times, or not at all realize, these modern era young athletes do not have a 'normal' Youth.
