Tatjana Maria played another smashing match to take down Dayana Yastremska 6-0 6-4 despite some struggles to close out the match in the second set in Hua Hin.
This is a way closer match on paper than it ended up being but Maria shined once again. She made a habit of exposing attacking players last year at Wimbledon with her incredible defensive prowess and that's what happened here. Yastremska is a player who plays very aggressive tennis keeping points short.
It's a good tactic generally if you can keep up hitting the ball for the entirety of the match. Yastremska wasn't and the start was particularly bad. Unable to control the ball at all, she rushed from one error to another as Maria patiently racked up the games. After only 30 minutes, Maria snatched the first set with a bagel 6-0.
The second set opened with an early break for the German as she took a 3-0 lead once again. Yastremska never gave up on her tactics and continued attacking with some minor success. She pulled back the break 2-3 but simply could not win a game on her serve. That break started a mad sequence of events that saw six breaks in a row.
Neither player was able to convert a serving game and ultimately the final break finished the match as Maria escaped 6-4 in the second set.
