It was a memorable day for Switzerland's Jil Teichmann, as she toppled fifth seed Yulia Putintseva to reach the quarterfinals at the Top Seed Open.
The World No.63 required just an hour and 28 minutes to notch a 6-2 6-2 victory. Having triumphed in Prague and Palermo last year, Teichmann traded early breaks with her Kazakh opponent. However, the Swiss soon took control of the match, winning four consecutive games to take the first set. The second set saw Putintseva commit a slew of double faults and unforced errors, with Teichmann winning five games in a row to seal the victory.
Teichmann next faces American Cici Bellis in the quarterfinals, as Bellis defeated compatriot
Jessica Pegula 6-3 6-2. Bellis broke her opponent an astounding six times, while being broken only twice herself.
It was a pleasant day for the Americans as wild card
Shelby Rogers stifled a second set comeback from Canadian teenager
Leylah Fernandez. After taking the first set 6-2, Rogers faced a 2-5 deficit in the second set. However, the World No.116 capitalized on some passive play from Fernandez to win the next four games. She then served out the match, prevailing 6-2 7-5 after an hour and 39 minutes.
Rogers faces a daunting task in the quarterfinals, as she will meet former World No.1
Serena Williams. The 23-time Grand Slam champion
booked her quarterfinal spot by defeating sister
Venus Williams in the pair's 31st meeting on the WTA Tour.
