Camila Giorgi was slammed by former player
Rennae Stubbs after celebrating following the conclusion of a rally in which
Venus Williams fell to the ground.
It was a very heated battle between Williams and Giorgi lasting over three hours and concluding with the win of the American legend. It was the best match 43-year-old Williams played in a very long time and her first win on grass since 2021. The win was much deserved and thankfully it wasn't overshadowed by a very questionable move by the Italian.
Controversy is not an unfamiliar topic for Giorgi who saw more than a few in her career. This one was described as possibly the lowest moment of her career by Stubbs who slammed her on Twitter as the match was going on. The situation occurred in the middle of the first set. Williams was running towards a ball and slipped falling to the ground hard.
The ball she played went wide and Giorgi celebrated that without showing much concern for her opponent It was an atypical reaction as most players make sure the opponent is good but Giorgi didn't seem particularly interested in that. Stubbs reacted:
"Camilla Giorgi just yelled Si when @Venuseswilliams just fell over and screamed! I mean wtf !!! I honestly think that could be the lowest moment of her career!!!! And you NEVER want to see this face coming at you now! Come on Vee!"
Venus Williams had a signature reaction as well because when she stepped up to serve in the next point she gave Giorgi a rather long stare. As Stubbs wrote down in the comment, Venus did continue playing with a lot of force and ultimately prevailed in three sets. A huge win for the veteran who is likely playing her final year on the Tour.
