Sloane Stephens is facing one of the toughest moments of her career, and an injury has forced her to withdraw from Indian Wells. The former US Open champion is enduring a negative streak of 10 consecutive losses, and now injuries are complicating matters for the 32-year-old American.
The 2017 US Open champion had received a wildcard for the tournament, after continuing her downward slide in the WTA rankings, currently sitting at No. 119 in the world. Her absence from Wimbledon will cause her to drop at least 10 more positions, as she won’t be able to defend her third-round finish in 2024 (losing to Daria Kasatkina).
Stephens’ last victory came in July 2024, against Elsa Jacquemot on the grass courts of Wimbledon (6-3, 6-3). After that, a second-round loss to Diana Shnaider (1-6, 1-6) kicked off her negative streak, the worst of her career so far.
Stephens had finished 9 consecutive seasons in the top 40 from 2012 to 2020. However, she has struggled to maintain consistent form in recent years, and the second half of the 2024 season has been undoubtedly the toughest. In 2025, she has yet to regain her momentum, and now an injury is her biggest hurdle.
Stephens had been part of the draw for the first round and was set to face former Australian Open champion Sofia Kenin. However, the organization announced her withdrawal from the tournament, with Madison Inglis, a qualifier, replacing her. The cause is believed to be a foot problem, though details regarding the severity of the injury are still unknown.
For now, Stephens is still confirmed for the Miami Open, where she also received a wildcard. The former world No. 3 continues to stretch her tough time on tour.
