As the song goes, the Only Way is Up and in the case of Emma Raducanu, that is certainly the case despite dropping 38 places in next week's WTA Rankings ahead of the Miami Open.
Raducanu has been handed a wildcard and in doing so has a glorious chance to make huge leaps up the WTA Rankings akin to Angelique Kerber, Caroline Wozniacki and Naomi Osaka have done in the past week alone. The 21-year-old has spent most of the last year on the sidelines which holds the key.
The 21-year-old showed at Indian Wells albeit in defeat to Aryna Sabalenka that she certainly has the game to trouble the top names and aside from perhaps her loss to Anhelina Kalinina at the Qatar Open, she has faired pretty well since returning. She is currently World No.288 when the rankings get updated on Monday morning and will be relying on wildcards.
Albeit with Wozniacki, Osaka and Kerber on the rise, she may get them more easier and also join them in rising up the rankings. Kerber for instance rose 268 places in one week. But with her last tournament which is Stuttgart coming up where she last defended in 2023, she will soon not be defending anything for the rest of the season so no matter what she plays in, it will only be growth.
Caroline Wozniacki is case and point and despite only playing a few tournaments, she is back within touching distance of the top 100 after only a few months back on tour showing the route back for Raducanu. Her fate will be confirmed when the Miami Open draw gets released this evening, but despite a latest rankings drop, the only way is certainly up for the former US Open champion starting this next week in Florida.
