Coco Gauff has fumed at the incident which marred her defeat at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games as she fell to Donna Vekic in the Last 16 in a shock loss.
Guaff was left in tears as she fumed at the umpire and supervisor. She was facing a break point in the second set and claimed that she was interrupted by an incorrect call when hitting her return.
But the umpire disagreed and awarded the point to Vekic. This prompted the American to argue her case and she didn't win another game from there losing 7-5, 6-2. She explained afterwards why she felt the need to approach the chair. But also while this was the case, she admitted that she didn't think it affected her ability to win. But that VAR in her view is needed in the game.
"I felt that he called it before I hit it and I don't think the ref disagreed, I think he just thought it didn't affect my swing, which I felt like it did," she said.
"There's been multiple times this year where that happened to me, where I feel like I always have to be an advocate for myself on the court."
"I feel like in tennis, we should have a VAR system because these points are big deals. And, yeah, usually afterwards, they apologise, so it's kind of frustrating when the sorry doesn't help you once the match is over."
"I can't say I would have won the match if I would have won that point but, for sure, being not a break, whereas maybe replaying that point can make a big difference in that game. But I'm not going sit here and say one point affected the result today, because I was already on the losing side of things before that point happened."
It also occurred last time she was at Roland Garros, an incident she referenced on Tuesday with the supervisor and that she felt she was getting cheated constantly.
"It happened to me in July, it happened to me here. This isn’t fair. This isn’t fair," the 20-year-old insisted. "I feel like I’m getting cheated on constantly in this game. I constantly feel like that and then I have to argue. No because I do and then you guys apologise after."
