Tunisia’s tennis star
Ons Jabeur has agreed with the
comments of Poland’s Iga Swiatek where she stated that she receives a lot of
hate online after one bad performance.
The current world number one made those remarks while talking
to the media recently where she revealed how she received hate messages after
losing just one set.
"For sure today's match wasn't perfect. We all saw
that. But the amount of hate and criticism that me and my team get after even
losing a set is just ridiculous,” she said. "I want to encourage people to
be more thoughtful when they comment on the Internet.
“We all sacrifice a lot. We're all working really hard to be
in that place. We're always giving 100% of what we can do every day. It's sad
for me to see that people I work with and myself, we're really judged."
Jabeur was quoted in a report where she agreed with the sentiments
of Swiatek and also stated that most of the online hate comes from unsuccessful
gamblers.
"Yeah, we do. I mean, I'm glad that Iga is talking
about it,” she said. “Honestly, I mean, you win, you lose, you get hate
messages no matter what you do. We need more nicer people in this earth, but I
don't think you can change the mentality of some betters.
“They have nothing to do in their life, and they are just
spending money on you, and probably, what, they lost a couple of bucks on Iga
losing a set."
Jabeur, who is the current world number five, is currently taking
part in the Cincinnati Open (Western & Southern Open) where she has already
booked her place in the quarterfinal after being awarded a walkover against Croatia’s
Donna Vekić in the round of 16 tie on Thursday.
