Pam Shriver thinks
Serena Williams was quite fortunate in getting
Danka Kovinic in the first round as the Montenegrin has been struggling recently.
Serena Williams will face Danka Kovinic of Montenegro in her first-round match at the
US Open and the packed stands will be right behind her. Williams will try to keep going as long as she can and she will certainly like to avoid a 1st round exit at her last event.
Former player Shriver thinks it's a good matchup for her as she wrote on social media:
"Serena Williams first round opponent Kovinic has won 4 games in her last 4 sets played. Kovinic much better on clay, where at Roland Garros pushed Iga in 3rd round loss. Serena has won more matches since Wimbledon than Kovinic. This is as good a first round as Serena could get"
There is some truth to that but Kovinic is far from a pushover on hard courts despite her clay prowess. The Montenegrin stunned Emma Raducanu earlier this year in Melbourne so she can rise to the occasion if need be. There doesn't get any better than probably beating Williams in her last match of an iconic career.
