Elina
Svitolina swapped tennis rackets for weapons as she was seen holding a rocket
launcher during her visit to Ukraine. The world No. 23 visited a military camp
near the city of Kharkiv during her off-season, spending time with soldiers who
showed her the weapons they use.
Svitolina honours Ukrainian soldiers in Kharkiv
The
30-year-old tennis player has been a prominent activist regarding the war,
often participating in events with the government or activities supporting
Ukrainians. Svitolina shared several Instagram stories from the camp,
expressing her gratitude to the soldiers for their service and dedication to
the country.
"Kharkiv holds a special place in my heart," said
the former world No. 3. "The city gave me the feeling of having a true
home when I began my professional career here at the age of 12. The city
continues to provide warmth and protection during this great war. This is my
country, my people, my Kharkiv, and our heroes."
Svitolina, married to Gael Monfils, does not plan to compete
in tournaments at the start of the 2025 season. Her debut will take place at
the
Australian Open. The world No. 23 will enter the tournament as a seeded
player and, unlike most of her colleagues, has chosen to head straight to
Melbourne shortly before the event to prepare for the first Grand Slam of the
year.
