Canada’s tennis star Leylah Fernandez has expressed disappointment after suffering a defeat in the Madrid Open. The 21-year-old suffered a defeat in the round of 32 of the mega-event to Tunisia’s Ons Jabeur with a score of 7-5, 2-6, 6-4.
Fernandez, in a recent post on her official account on the social media platform Instagram, expressed disappointment over the result but expressed optimism to bounce back strongly. "This one hurts. The kind of hurt that pushes you to work harder and go further. Congrats to @onsjabeur on a great battle yesterday. Thank you Madrid Next stop: Rome," wrote Fernandez.
The defeat would be a painful one for Fernandez who is not going through a great season. The Montreal-born has participated in seven events in the 2024 season and has only managed to play in the quarterfinal or beyond on one occasion. Her most impressive outing this year came in the WTA event in Doha where she lost in the last-eight clash with Elena Rybakina with a score of 6-4, 6-2. In the other events, Fernandez lost in first the round of the Charleston Open, the second round of the Miami Open, the second round of the Indian Wells, the first round of the San Diego Open, the second round of the Dubai Tennis Championships and the second round of the Australian Open.
