Amid recent struggles, Ons Jabeur seems to be finding some form again at the Madrid Open and also tackling into some real grit and resolve as she secured a 7-5, 2-6, 6-4 win over Leylah Fernandez, a tricky operator on the clay on Saturday afternoon.
Jabeur who was on a bit of a losing streak showed that it only takes one win and it is one she got earlier in the week and she has flown since then albeit against the Canadian, it wasn't without adversity. She had to come from 4-2 down in the third set and won four games on the bounce to seal the win. An opportunity perhaps that Fernandez in particular will think got away from her in the end.
It also continues Jabeur's love affair with the Madrid Open. In terms of win percentage, she sits at 90.9% which is better than Serena Williams, Iga Swiatek and also the defending champion Aryna Sabalenka. That translates to 10-1 for the Tunisian. She also forces a real clash to watch as she faces Jelena Ostapenko on Monday for a spot in the Quarter-Finals.
For Fernandez, she will take a smidge of solace from her defeat. She hasn't been in the best form herself recently. Affectionally known on this surface as Clay-lah, she will hope to take this forward. She had not reached past a second round since the Abu Dhabi Open in early March so was in desperate need for some form. The same can be said for her opponent, but Jabeur's luck at this tournament continues to produce. While for Fernandez, it runs out and she moves onto Rome. Jabeur moves onto Monday and joins Iga Swiatek for instance who won earlier today. Other top names including Aryna Sabalenka and Elena Rybakina play tomorrow at Caja Magica.
