With the BNP Paribas Open
Indian Wells event postponed this year due to Covid-19, local fans will miss the opportunity to see their favorite stars in action.
Often regarded as the "fifth Grand Slam", the tournament tends to offer enticing matchups in the early rounds. There was none bigger than when 23-time Grand Slam champion
Serena Williams faced
Victoria Azarenka in the first round in 2019. A two-time Major champion herself, Azarenka was returning to form after taking a hiatus from tennis. The same could be said of Williams, who had just given birth to her first child a year earlier.
Dubbed "the battle of the mothers", both ladies left it all on the court, entertaining the crowd with movement and shot-placement that was reminiscent of their younger years. Each woman fought off break points, employing aggressive play from the baseline.
Nonetheless, Williams proved to be the superior athlete that day, prevailing 7-5 6-3 to advance to the next round. However, there was no hard feelings as both mothers shared a warm embrace and a laugh at the net following the match.
