Martina Navratilova holds a number of records in professional tennis and is regarded as one of the best players of all time.
The Czech-born American has won 18 Grand Slam singles titles and reached the
Wimbledon singles final 12 times. She claimed her first Major singles title at
Wimbledon in 1978, defeating rival and top seed Chris Evert in the final. Furthermore, this victory saw her rise to No.1 on the WTA rankings for the first time in her career.
Evert had dispatched of defending champion Virginia Wade in the semifinals and was the favorite to win the title. Navratilova battled past third-seeded Evonne Goolagong Cawley in three sets to reach her first Wimbledon final. Although Evert ran away with the first set, Navratilova fought back to claim a 2-6 6-4 7-5 victory. This would be the first of Navratilova's nine Wimbledon championships, a record that still stands today.
