World number one Belarus’ Aryna Sabalenka has shared a heartfelt message on the birthday of his late father.
The 25-year-old posted a message on a story on her official Instagram account stating: “It would be your 47th birthday dad. Miss you so much… time goes by, but the pain is still the same. I miss you papa.”
Sabalenka’s father — Sergey Sabalenka — passed away suddenly at the age of 43 in 2020 but it will be fair to say that he would’ve been a proud father seeing his daughter cementing the top spot in the WTA rankings.
The Minsk-born has been through a roller coaster of a ride in the recently concluded US Open 2023.
She became the world number one during the competition after the previous top-ranked player and defending champion Iga Swiatek was knocked out of the tournament in the fourth round after losing to Latvia’s Jeļena Ostapenko with a score of 3-6, 6-3, 6-1.
However, that joy was short-lived as Sabalenka ended up losing the final of the mega-event to America’s young tennis star Coco Gauff who secured the title with a score of 2-6, 6-3, 6-2.
Overall, Sabalenka will be pretty satisfied with her performance throughout the year as she played in the semifinal or beyond in each of the Grand Slams.
The world number one won the Australian Open after beating Elena Rybakina in the final with a score of 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.
She ended up runner-up in the US Open whereas she played in the semifinal of the French Open and Wimbledon.
