America’s tennis star
Jessica Pegula has been ruled out of
the upcoming WTA 1000 Guadalajara Open.
The tournament is set to be played from September 17 to 23
in Guadalajara, Mexico.
Pegula, who was set to defend her title this year, announced
in a post on the social media platform Instagram, announced that she will skip
this year’s competition.
“I am sorry to be missing this year after so many great memories
last year,” wrote the current world number five.
Pegula defeated Greece’s Maria Sakkari in the final of the
competition last year in straight sets with a score of 6-2, 6-3 to lift the
title.
The 29-year-old is coming on the back a mixed
US Open 2023.
She had a disappointing outing in the singles category where she was knocked out
of the round of 16 after losing to fellow American Madison Keys in straight sets
with a score of 6-1, 6-3.
In the doubles category with Coco Gauff, Pegula was defeated
in the quarterfinal by Taiwan’s Hsieh Su-wei and China’s Wang Xinyu with a score
of 7-6, 3-6, 6-4.
In the mixed doubles category, Pegula went all the way to
the final of the competition where she along with her partner Austin Krajicek
suffered a defeat to Kazakhstan’s Anna Danilina and Finland’s Harri Heliovaara
in straight sets with a score of 6-3, 6-4.
