Former World No.1, Arantxa Sanchez Vicario has began her fraud trial in Barcelona breaking down in tears claiming she trusted her ex husband to manage her assets.
According to the prosecutor, the 51-year-old was charged with confiscating assets with her ex-husband, Josep Santacana after they allegedly defrauded Banque de Luxembourg.
Accused of hiding assets to avoid a debt of $8.14m, this has been ongoing since 2009. She claimed though that she was unaware of any illegal activities giving sole trust to Santacana.
She stressed that being a tennis player means that she did not have the in depth knowledge to handle assets. They broke up in 2019, but could soon be serving a sentence of four years if found guilty and will be liable for returning millions of euros in damages.
"I did what he told me to do, because I am a tennis player, I have no knowledge of assets or companies or anything. I trusted my husband," Arantxa Sanchez Vicario told the court in Barcelona.
