Britain’s young tennis star
Emma Raducanu has revealed that
winning
Wimbledon is her ‘long term’ goal. The 21-year-old was once regarded as
the next big thing after winning the US Open at the age of just 18 in 2021. The
most impressive aspect of that triumph was the fact that she started the
campaign through a qualification round but still managed to go all the way and
lift the title after beating Canada’s Leylah Fernandez in the final in straight
sets with a score of 6-4, 6-3.
However, after that, Raducanu struggled with consistent fitness, and because of this, she missed three out of the four Grand Slams in 2023. The Toronto-born star returned to the court earlier this year and has produced some impressive performances. Her best performance came in the Billie Jean King Cup, where she played a key role in helping Great Britain secure a spot in the final round after beating France.
Raducanu recently spoke with Marie Claire UK, where she discussed a number of things. She spoke about how important it was to win the US Open at such an early stage of her career and how she had to grind it out to return to full fitness this season. Raducanu also revealed that her long-term objective remains winning Wimbledon on her home soil.
“Winning the US Open was my career highlight,” she said. “It
came with a lot of challenges but I think that what it gave me outweighs
everything else. I think the biggest lesson I’ve learnt in terms of injury
recovery is not to rush back. My impatience is probably one of my biggest
downfalls because I basically rushed the process of my recovery, and set myself
back many months. Long term, I want to win Wimbledon. That’s my number one goal.
But in the short term, I just want to keep staying healthy and improving my
skills. Working on the actual development of them rather than any immediate
results - that’s my priority right now.”
