The semi-finals are now set at the
US Open Mixed Doubles with
Jessica Pegula and
Jack Draper setting up a blockbuster tie with Iga Swiatek and Casper Ruud with Novak Djokovic also felled en route albeit by the team the former beat.
That being Daniil Medvedev and Mirra Andreeva who were in a jovial mood after seeing off Djokovic and Danilovic 4-2, 5-3. Djokovic hasn't been seen on court since his damning loss to Jannik Sinner at Wimbledon, he was only in Montenegro around 24 hours ago so was at one point a doubt to make it to New York.
But Andreeva herself has been injured as of late and is only now returning to the tour after a left ankle injury she suffered in Montreal against McCartney Kessler. The Russian teamed with Medvedev and won through to a tie against Pegula and Draper who had previously seen off the team of Emma Raducanu and Carlos Alcaraz.
Much discussed prior to the event, it was an easy win for Draper and Pegula with the latter being the perfect pick in reality given her doubles experience for the Brit who already was partnered with Zheng Qinwen and Paula Badosa. Both of whom got injured prior to the event and had to withdraw so certainly not luck on his side originally but being a home favourite and also a doubles star, Pegula is the perfect player to step in. They thrashed Andreeva and Medvedev in the Quarter-Finals 4-1, 4-1. They now will take on the team of Iga Swiatek and Casper Ruud.
Swiatek and Ruud saw off Caty McNally and Lorenzo Musetti after Keys and Tiafoe to reach this point and only dropped six games over the course of the two matches in two comprehensive 4-1, 4-2 wins. They will return to face off tomorrow. While the latter semi-final quarter wise is semi the doubles specialists portion.
Collins and Harrison through after being alternates
Danielle Collins and Christian Harrison won through after being alternates at the start of the night. Jannik Sinner decided to withdraw late after his Cincinnati retirement and it left Katerina Siniakova unfortunately the odd one out.
Due to rules, she couldn't go and find a new partner and so Collins and Harrison who were alternates and ready were set to play. Harrison is a proven doubles player in his own right and has teamed with Collins a few years back and signed up to play also at Roland Garros a few years prior to 2023 when they played at the US Open together. So they know each other well.
It was a bit of a magic tandem too as they eased past Belinda Bencic and Alexander Zverev 4-0, 5-3 to reach the Quarter-Finals where they would take on Taylor Townsend and Ben Shelton. A dream combo of sorts as Townsend is herself a great doubles player and Shelton is on some demon form after winning Canada and having a good week in Cincinnati.
They were facing Amanda Anisimova and Holger Rune and won easily 4-2, 5-4 in the end. They then faced Collins and Harrison and it was all the alternate pair as they won the first set 4-1 but it went to a tie-break in the second which was a close shave as Collins and Harrison could've been taken all the way. But they weren't as they sealed it 7-2. They return tomorrow to face the defending champions.
Saying they are doing it for the doubles stars, they saw off Karolina Muchova and Andrey Rublev earlier in the night as well as Elena Rybakina and Taylor Fritz and now return to face Collins and Harrison to likely face a singles duo in the final. An interesting round of matches for sure.
