Donna Vekic takes a place into the last-8 of the
Australian Open, after a three-set battle against
Linda Fruhvirtova It isn’t a surprise to say that Linda is one of the
players with the greatest projection on the circuit, but her performance in
this Australia Open had been better than expected, surpassing the first three rounds.
The 17-year-old looked nervous at the beginning of the match and made several
unforced errors, and the Croatian knew how to take advantage of. In a quick
first set, Vekic prevailed and closed it 6-2, against a rival who had no
answers to the powerful serve and the mobility of her rival.
In the second set the roles were reversed, and it was
as if a new match began, with an overwhelming Fruhvirtova who took the set by a
resounding 6-1. The Czech was much more aggressive and took advantage of the
doubts that her rival showed in the service.
The third set started with high intensity from both
players, the Czech youngstar breaking a break in the third game, but quickly
suffered a break back at the cost of a double fault. The 26-year-old showed an
impressive game and finished the match by a score of 6-2, 1-6, 6-3.
For a place in the semifinals, she faces the
Belarusian World No. 5
Aryna Sabalenka, who achieved an important victory
against
Belinda Bencic in straight sets.
