Former world number one America’s
Venus Williams will be
taking part in the upcoming competition Tennis In The Land Cleveland.
The 43-year-old will be participating in the tournament in
order to prepare for the upcoming US Open.
The fourth and final Grand Slam is set to begin in less than
10 days’ time and players from all over the world will participate.
The tournament is set to feature some other notable players
including the 2017 US Open Champion Sloane Stephens, 2021 US Open runner-up
Canada’s Leylah Fernandez and America’s Lauren Davis.
The draw for the competition — which is set to be played
from the 19th till the 26th of August — will be announced
on Friday.
Williams is a seven-time Grand Slam winner and also held the
top spot in the WTA rankings back in 2002.
The Lynwood-born most successful competition remains
Wimbledon where she won the title five times.
Her first major triumph came in the summer of 2001 when she
defeated fellow American Lindsay Davenport in the final with a score of 6-3,
7-6 to lift the Wimbledon title.
Her last major title was also in London in 2008 where she
defeated her sister Serena Williams with a score of 7-5, 6-4. Venus also won
the US Open twice in her career — in 2000 and in 2001.
