Venus Williams' singles nightmare continues, but Serena reunion gives Cincinnati comeback new life

Venus Williams' latest singles comeback has hit another difficult moment, with the 46-year-old suffering her 14th consecutive WTA Tour defeat at the Cincinnati Open. The American was unable to produce another upset on Friday, falling 6-2, 6-2 to Colombian qualifier Emiliana Arango in just 66 minutes.
Williams entered the WTA 1000 event with a wildcard and had already shown during her comeback that she could still compete with higher-ranked opponents. Her victory over Peyton Stearns in Washington, however, remains her most recent singles win, with the Cincinnati loss extending a streak that has now become increasingly difficult to ignore.
Arango, ranked No. 95 in the world, took control early and never allowed Williams to find a way into the contest. The Colombian had won only five of her previous 20 hard-court matches but produced a dominant performance when it mattered, breaking Williams repeatedly and closing out a straightforward victory.
The defeat means Williams' singles losing streak now stands at 14 matches, continuing a run that stretches back to her previous competitive victory. At 46, every appearance has increasingly become an opportunity to defy expectations, but Cincinnati provided little room for another comeback as Arango dictated the match from the baseline.
Venus Williams' singles struggles continue
The Cincinnati defeat adds another chapter to a difficult period for the seven-time Grand Slam champion. Williams has relied on wildcards as she continues her return to professional competition, with the opportunity to play at major WTA events allowing her to test herself against the current generation.
Her singles results, however, have been difficult. The 14-match losing streak underlines the physical and competitive challenge of competing at the highest level at this stage of her career, particularly against players more than two decades younger.
Yet Williams' Cincinnati campaign is not over.
She will now turn her attention to doubles, where she is set to reunite with younger sister Serena Williams. The partnership gives the sisters another opportunity to share the court and provides a very different challenge from singles.
For Venus, the doubles draw could therefore offer a chance to change the narrative surrounding her Cincinnati appearance. Rather than facing another rising singles player across the net, she will have Serena alongside her as the Williams sisters return to competition together.
The reunion also adds another layer to what has already been one of the most remarkable comeback stories of the 2026 season. Venus' singles run may have ended with a 14th consecutive defeat, but her Cincinnati campaign — and her latest opportunity to compete alongside Serena — is not over yet.
