Former world number one
Venus Williams is set to make her
broadcast debut at the
French Open. The second Grand Slam of the year will
begin from May 27 where players from all over the world will participate to
showcase their talent and secure the ultimate prize as well.
According to
Athlon Sports, former world number one Venus is set to join TNT to make her broadcast debut for the Roland Garros. She will join a host of stars in the coverage, including former world number ones Andre Agassi,
Chris Evert, Jim Courier, Lindsay Davenport, John McEnroe, and Caroline
Wozniacki.
The development will mark the beginning of a new chapter in
Venus career as interestingly, has not retired from the sport yet. The
44-year-old has won seven Grand Slam titles in her career but has never managed
to win a major title while playing at the Roland Garros. Her best outing at the
French Open came way back in 2002 where she finished as the runner-up after
losing to her sister Serena Williams in straight sets with a score of 7-5, 6-3.
Recently, Williams, in an interview while speaking at the Miami Open, where she is the former world number one, stated that she has no idea when she will return to the court. "I don't really have a plan for the first time
in my life,” she said. “I love playing I play everyday, if I feel ready to play
then I'll play.”
This year, Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz will be defending his
title in the men’s singles category, where Poland’s Iga Swiatek will be defending
her crown in the women’s singles category. Alcaraz defeated Germany’s Alexander
Zverev in the final in a five-set thriller with a score of 6–3, 2–6, 5–7, 6–1,
6–2. On the other hand, Swiatek defeated Italy’s Jasmine Paolini in the final
in straight sets with a score of 6-2, 6-1 to win her fourth French Open title
last year.
